Pind daan in Gaya is a Hindu ritual to offer prayers and food (pinda) to deceased ancestors, performed in the city of Gaya Ji, Bihar. It is believed that conducting this ceremony here helps the souls of ancestors achieve peace and salvation (moksha).
According to the epic Ramayana, Lord Rama, his wife Sita, and his brother Lakshmana performed the pind daan ceremony for his father, King Dasharatha, in Gaya. This association with the revered epic adds to the sacredness of the site.
Gaya is also home to the Vishnupad Temple, which houses a footprint believed to belong to Lord Vishnu. It is said that performing pind daan in Gaya can grant liberation to the departed souls, as Vishnu is considered the principal deity of the temple.
One of the most important sites for performing the main pind daan ritual.
Pilgrims offer tarpan, or water libations, in the sacred Phalgu River.
A specific location for offering pinds to the departed souls.
A sacred banyan tree where pind daan rituals are also performed.
A pind daan ceremony in Gaya typically involves several steps:
An initial prayer ceremony.
Offering rice balls (pinda) mixed with honey, milk, and other ingredients to the ancestors. This is done with dedication and faith.
The offering of water and black sesame seeds to the ancestors.
Offering a meal to a Brahmin, which is considered a mandatory part of the ritual.
The ritual is especially important during the 16-day period of Pitru Paksha, also known as Shradh Paksha. It is believed that during this time, ancestors visit the earth and await offerings from their descendants.
Hari Dham App promises you that your puja will be performed as per the scriptures by a qualified Brahmin.
